Telemedical center (TMC)

- Three PC working stations at the Charité telemedical center (picture: BMWi/ Next Generation Media).
The telemedical center (TMC) consists of several fully equipped PC working stations. Here the daily measured vital parameters enter the patients' electronic patient records (EPR). At least one specialized physician and one nurse work at the TMC around the clock. They review the patients' medical data and initiate further steps if required. These activities range from contacting the patient and his attending physisian or adopting the drug dose to the introduction of emergency steps, including live saving medical information for the first aid team.
The EPR contains data about the patient's daily measurement activities, his residence, treating physicians, rescue centers nearby, contact persons in case of emergency, drug plans, comorbidities and information about former hospital stays. An emergency call system is embedded: If a patient pushes a "red button" at home, he is connected immediately with the telemedical center. Medical experts see who is calling and communicate with him via loudspeaker in an uncomplicated way.
For the clinical trial which is part of the project "Partnership for the Heart", a TMC has been established in Berlin (Charité) as well as a TMC in Stuttgart (Robert Bosch hospital).
